Derek Xu
Derek Xu is a violinist whose career has been marked by both remarkable competition successes and extensive orchestral leadership. A versatile musician, Derek has excelled as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player, captivating audiences with his technical prowess and interpretive depth.
Derek's musical journey began under the mentorship of esteemed violinists Xiao Long Ding and Todor Pelev at Idyllwild Arts Academy, where he honed his craft with dedication and passion. His academic and artistic pursuits continued at Brown University, where he studied under the guidance of Lois Finkel. During his time at Brown, Derek made a notable impact by winning the prestigious concerto competition in 2019 and receiving the Margery MacColl Award in 2017, reflecting his exceptional talent and commitment to his art.
Derek has held positions as a soloist and concertmaster with the Pasadena Youth Symphony Orchestra, Idyllwild Arts Academy Orchestra, and Brown University Orchestra.
Currently, Derek is a member of the Chelsea Symphony. In addition to his musical achievements, Derek has a successful career as a Software Engineering Team Lead at Bloomberg LP, balancing his dual passions for music and technology with remarkable skill.
