
Channing Yu
Recognized by Anthony Tommasini of The Boston Globe for his “imaginative piano work,” American pianist Channing Yu has appeared as piano soloist with orchestras including the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra, Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchèstra Nova, and Mercury Orchestra. He has been featured in recital as a Pittsburgh Concert Society Young Artist and in broadcast on WQXR-FM (New York). As a chamber music pianist, he has performed with sul ponticello and collaborated with numerous artists in recital. He has studied with Hanna Li and Wha Kyung Byun; recent teachers include Matthew Odell, David Malusà, and Assaff Weisman. A national award-winning orchestra and opera conductor, he has been Music Director of the Mercury Orchestra in Cambridge, Massachusetts since 2008 and has served as the chair of the jury panel for the Fou Ts’ong International Piano Competition since 2022. As violinist he frequently serves as concertmaster or principal second violinist in the Chelsea Symphony; he also has also performed as concertmaster of the Greenwich Village Orchestra and the Brahms Society Orchestra and as a member of Camerata Notturna and the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra. He was the founding first violinist of the Kitchen Quartet, which was artist-in-residence at the Three Rivers Arts Festival in Pittsburgh, and was a member of the Mayim String Quartet and Quartetto Periodico.
