This program pairs John Corigliano’s To Music—a gentle homage to the Schubert song of the same name—with Robert Schumann’s “Rhenish” Symphony, inspired by the landscapes and spirit of the Rhine. Friedrich Gulda’s Cello Concerto (Saturday’s performance only) is a joyous romp through rock, jazz, and folk idioms. A new work by TCS Composition Fellow Ben Murphy rounds out the evening.

Ben Murphy is a queer Canadian composer and bassist, living in New York City since 2009.
His compositions have been performed at Carnegie Hall, earned an NYCAC grant, and been recorded by the Mannes Orchestra. His arrangements, particularly of Caroline Shaw’s music, have been performed by ensembles such as BBC Radio Orchestra, Paris Philharmonic, Houston Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic.

Alec Hon, cellist, has performed extensively across stages in North America and Europe. A native of Southern California, Alec has participated in numerous local competitions, and has performed with the Mount Saint Mary College Orchestra, the South Coast Symphony, and the Bellflower Symphony Orchestra. He made his Lincoln Center debut in 2017 as a winner of the Columbia University Orchestra concerto competition, performing at Alice Tully Hall. Valentina Paolucci is a rising orchestral conductor and violinist currently based in New York City. She has recently graduated from the Juilliard School with a Masters Degree in Orchestral Conducting under a full scholarship, and was awarded the Robert Craft-Igor Stravinsky Conducting Award upon graduation. Valentina is currently a Conducting Fellow with The Chelsea Symphony, Conducting Fellow with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, and Music Director of the NYO-USA Alumni Orchestra at Carnegie Hall.
