Artistic Director Mark Seto kicks off The Chelsea Symphony’s 19th season with the world premiere of Aidan Gold’s Swallowtail, a breathtaking work that draws inspiration from the majestic landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. Violinist Joseph Morag and cellist Alec Hon are the featured soloists in the Double Concerto by Johannes Brahms, the composer’s final work for orchestra. TCS Conducting Fellow Damali Willingham leads the orchestra in William Grant Still’s Afro-American Symphony, a groundbreaking work that synthesizes the Blues and the European symphonic tradition.

Aidan Gold: Swallowtail


Aidan Gold is a composer, conductor, and percussionist. His music is widely varied, but focuses on musical characterization, narrative and storytelling, and performer agency / interaction. He is fascinated with the idea of music as a social act – a game or ritual that we perform to allow us to communicate and connect with one another, defining, challenging, and expanding our individual and collective identities.

Joseph Morag, acclaimed by the New York Times for his "gorgeous tone,"and "physically expressive cues,” has performed extensively as a soloist,chamber musician, and orchestral violinist. Alec Hon, cellist, has performed extensively across stages in North America and Europe. A native of Southern California, Alec has participated in numerous local competitions, and has performed with the Mount Saint Mary College Orchestra, the South Coast Symphony, and the Bellflower Symphony Orchestra. He made his Lincoln Center debut in 2017 as a winner of the Columbia University Orchestra concerto competition, performing at Alice Tully Hall. Mark Seto leads a wide-ranging musical life as a conductor, scholar, teacher, and violinist. He is Artistic Director and Conductor of The Chelsea Symphony in New York City, and Senior Lecturer in Music at Brown University, where he directs the Brown University Orchestra and teaches courses in music history, theory, and conducting. Recent highlights include performances with violinist Itzhak Perlman, violinist Randall Goosby, and clarinetist Anthony McGill, and the inauguration of The Lindemann Performing Arts Center at Brown University.

Damali Willingham is a conductor, composer, and bassoonist based in New Haven, CT. They recently graduated from the Berklee College of Music, where they made quite the impression as a young conductor. They served as a musical director and guest conductor of various ensembles, including the Berklee Motion Picture Orchestra, the school’s largest student-run ensemble.
