April 22 Earth Day
Sunday | 4.22.18 | 2:00 PM
American Museum of Natural History, Milstein Family Hall of Ocean Life
TCS is thrilled to present the Pulitzer and Grammy Award-winning piece Become Ocean by American composer John Luther Adams in the Paul and Irma Milstein Family Hall of Ocean Life at the American Museum of Natural History. Commissioned by the Seattle Symphony and premiered in 2013, this single movement work was inspired by the oceans of Alaska and the Pacific Northwest.
From a note in the score: "Life on this earth first emerged from the sea. As the polar ice melts and sea level rises, we humans find ourselves facing the prospect that once again we may quite literally become ocean."
TCS is honored to welcome Dr. Ana Porzecanski, Director for the Center of Biodiversity & Conservation at AMNH, to join TCS conductors and special guests in conversation from the podium.
Surrounded by the drama of the undersea world and under the iconic 94-foot long blue whale, The Chelsea Symphony will also perform Alan Hovhaness' And God Created Great Whales and the world premiere of TCS composer Michael Boyman's The Howling Wilderness.
Special thanks to Steinway & Sons for graciously allowing TCS use of a Steinway official grand piano for this performance!
The concert will be held as part of EarthFest at the American Museum of Natural History in the Milstein Hall of Ocean Life. EarthFest is an all-day affair for the whole family, from early morning yoga to performances by Pilobolus and others, we look forward to seeing you in celebration of Earth Day!
