Join us for our 10th anniversary season opener featuring Brahms’s First Symphony, hearkening back to The Chelsea Symphony's inaugural year. Our Friday program includes Vaughan Williams’s interpretation of George Meredith’s poem of the same name, The Lark Ascending, spotlighting Deborah Nixon on violin. We will also hear one of Vivaldi’s 39 Bassoon concertos featuring Tilden Marbit. Oliver Hwa-Chow Hsu will bring us the sounds of Taiwanese neo-Romantic composer Tyzen Hsiao and his Cello Concerto during the Saturday performance. A new work entitled The Age of Nostalgia by TCS composer Seth Bedford opens the concert on both nights.

Born and raised in Vienna, Austria, Hwa-Chow Oliver Hsu began studying cello at age 5 and piano at age 10 and won awards on both instruments in Austria's national "Jugend Musiziert" youth competition. After moving to the United States, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Computer Science with a minor in Music from Swarthmore College, where he was recipient of the Garrigues Music Scholarship and, as winner of the 2002 Swarthmore College Concerto Competition, performed the Dvorak Cello …
Violinist Deborah Nixon is an active freelancer and educator currently based in New York City. A keen ensemble player, she has performed in various ensembles in the area, including the Bronx Opera, Mimesis Ensemble, and The Chelsea Symphony, with which she appeared as soloist in 2015. Also a dedicated educator, she is on faculty at several schools in the NYC area and maintains a private studio.

Tilden Marbit, a native New Yorker, started his musical training on piano when he was four. Later accepted into LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts for piano, Tilden was required to choose an orchestral instrument other than the piano. He never dreamed that the bassoon would soon consume his world. Tilden was accepted into McGill University’s School of Music as one of its first Schulich Scholars. Reuben Blundell has been a Chelsea Symphony conductor/violinist since 2012, enjoying collaborations with musicians, soloists, composers and other conductors. Conducting Aaron Dai’s The Night Before Christmas, first with B. D. Wong then Annie Golden narrating, he initiated, conducted and edited (in Premiere Pro) the orchestra’s 2020 remote performance, narrated by John Lithgow.
